Opinion: The pandemic will never be over
June 15, 2021. The date that California will reopen with all industries across the state returning to routine operations with added preventive measures such as masking and vaccinations. With malls, movie theaters, and indoor dining restaurants opening again, a positive outlook on the pandemic has influenced the hopes of many Californians with the idea of the return to ordinary life being at arms reach. |
Opinion: There is such thing as too many extracurriculars
Happiness. Defined in the Webster Dictionary as “a state of well-being and contentment.” It is a word, a feeling, that everyone has experienced at one point in their life. Extracurricular activities often bring this joy into the lives of students. From sports to leadership to service, these brain breaks serve as an expressive outlet for many people. |
College Experts Provide Advice to Students
Many of my overachieving peers have voiced their concerns about composing exceptional college applications due to the COVID-19 pandemic, oppressing the experiences they could have included in it. I scoured the internet for answers and came across an ABC News interview, where Han Mi Yoon-Wu, the UC director of undergraduate admissions, expressed what applicant readers are looking for in an application. From here, I proceeded to build the "perfect" college application to provide answers to my stressed-out upper class-men. |
Opinion: Youth Activists Have Power
We have hit an undeniable point in history where the power of youth and their voices has sparked movements that will soon become a cornerstone in American history. As I watched my quiet, out spoken peers rise during this vital time, I sought out to capture the power of today's brilliant, smart, and driven youth. |
Making 'Special' the New Norm
The number of students on Individual Education Plans and 504s had made being "special" the new normal. My goal for this article was to show that there isn't and will never be an education system that is "one size fits all." Therefore, everyone is thought about as unique because we are all incommensurable. However, this sensitive subject presented its challenges. After meetings with administration and lots of communication with our Editor-In-Chief, I was able to express the viewpoints of how education is continuing to evolve and will never be the same again.

Inside the Mind of a First Responder
From dry, cracked hands, to throbbing faces forced into the same N95, I wanted to capture our brave, selfless frontline workers and what they were going through, both physically and mentally. I interviewed an ER Nurse and even found myself on Facebook to better express how members in our local community had started taking action to honor, support, and commemorate our health heroes. My goal was for my audience to take a moment to appreciate their handwork and open the doors of opportunity to help. |
What is Putting the High in High School?
Hidden behind a smiling face is something much deeper and darker. Sarah Cambridge, a sophomore, grew up surrounded by drugs and alcohol. She started using these substances in a short amount of time. At age 13, she was "locked up" and had recently made her comeback in the past year. This feature was a test of my ethics as the topic was a sensitive one that I knew I had to get right. I trusted my gut intending to spread awareness of teenage drug use and tell Cambridge's inspiring story to the fullest extent.

The QuaranTEEN
The COVID-19 pandemic had severely impacted the lives of everyone around the world. However, teenagers are at a crucial point in their lives that allows them to grow physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially. I wanted to compare life during the lockdown in two countries on opposite sides of the world. I was fortunate enough to have the ability to interview students from Liao Ning, China. With the ultimate goal of exhibiting how teenagers around the globe are coping with the effects of the pandemic. |
Athletes Push Through Mental Barriers
The idea of being mentally tough while playing any sport is inherent throughout sports culture. How an athlete mentally prepares for a match is equally important as the physical preparation, and once an athlete is playing in a game, it is also essential that they carry a growth mindset and a positive attitude toward their teammates. As an athlete, I lived through many mental blocks during practice and definitely during games, but I soon discovered ways to pick myself back up and better prepare for the next match. |
UC Schools Consider Getting Rid of SAT Requirements
Many people blame the SAT for contributing to the economic inequalities of getting into college. A wealthy family can afford prep classes, and even hiring one-on-one tutors, a lower-income family may not be able to provide their child with extra courses or tutors. I wanted to show how the education system is taking steps toward granting more equal learning opportunities and making changes in their application systems.
